We delved into the history when the owners of Finn Hovsgate 7 wanted to give something back to the neighbourhood when developing their property. The property dates back to 1912, when a steam laundry was located there. Later, in 1967, a production facility for Fredrikstad Plastservice was built, which today consists of a two-storey brick building with an apartment, a studio and a warehouse. The building is in poor technical condition and will have to be demolished to make way for the new project. The area is designated for cultural preservation, which was central to the design of the project.
Based on the project framework and the historical layer, we have designed a new housing project that reflects Holmen's historical identity and architectural traditions. The project includes the construction of three four-person houses. Towards the street, a brick building inspired by the original steam laundry from 1912 will be built, with brick ornaments, roof details and materials adapted to the historic expression.
In the courtyard there are two buildings with gable and mansard roofs, inspired by the wooden buildings and old workers' dwellings in the Holmen area. Here we want to create a courtyard with communal and recreational areas that encourage neighbourhood life. We have always wanted to create a building that is in harmony with the identity of the area, that builds on the historical traces of the site and that gives something back to the neighbourhood.
